I chose this particular model because of low prices, high resolution, and is a flatbed scanner capable of handling even negative. I used it for several days and I must say, I love this scanner! It must be the quietest scanner I've ever seen. I was on the phone with my mom while scanning and she never heard. And 'even faster. At maximum resolution for scanning negatives preview takes maybe 20 seconds. The analysis itself takes less than two minutes. The quality of the scans is impressive, if you make a plan, color negatives, or black and white negatives (true black and white one). Software wise, the TWAIN driver is very nice with tons of options. It works perfectly on my XP Pro system with the end of the graphics card rather low. The combined PhotoStudio sucks, however, and I do not use it I find Irfanview (free online) works very well for almost all my needs, including as a facilitator for batch scanning to file. I have not tried the included OmniPage, but I have an older version so I expect that it works very well. The other contribution here seems to reject this scanner be made cheaper. Personally it seems to me. If you are aggressive with your equipment, then yes, twice as much to spend for something completely metal. However, I treat my equipment well. The plastic support negative works well for me, and it is very easy to use. I do not see anything wrong with the plastic hinge. It runs smoothly and seems well designed. Another good thing about this scanner is that it does not weigh much at all! I like this since I was a glass desk that take place can not have a ton of weight. The design is nice. It is beautiful and elegant against my blue glass. All in all I would recommend this scanner for anyone looking for a good, fast all purpose scanner for less than $ 100 worth the money (and the free super saving shipping is a nice bonus). Best Christmas gift I received. 546 of 570 people found the following review helpful. CanoScan 4400F 8600F vs. Against caveat emptor, it is difficult to find comparison specs between some of the new CanoScan. After looking at both the 4400F and 8600F, 8600F except the ability to scan medium format negatives and combined with a light version of Photoshop, 8600 is simply a more heavy machinery. An important difference is the lid. The 8600 has metal hinges and fits vertically on the metal support. There will also be open to 90 degrees of movement. The 4400 has a plastic hinge. To accommodate books or thick materials, has a break-away "articulating hinge - if you do like the thick of a book on the flatbed lid hinges open to attach the object to fit. The hinge 4400 will not stay open on their own Both lids are quite heavy and solid (more than 8600), which is good if you examine the books or things to bed. But since 4400 the hinge is all plastic and has a small piece of plastic that contains the set or adjust the hinge, which really does not look that lends itself to many of the farms book. It seems that eventually break the blockade, as it is, it seems that their break time to accommodate an open book. (As I do a lot of digitized books, I decided that 8600 was better than that, as a result of the adjustment cap and the hinge construction and due to its heavy lid, although the extra money. If you regularly check was origins photocopying or thin, the 4400 would have been nice.) ) One last thing about the construction of the lid: The 8600 is a sturdy cord to power the lights in the lid, while the 4400 provides power to the lid of a thin ribbon cable that is visible in the hinge and seems somewhat vulnerable to heavy use.
